It's good to stay updated
about property values in your area. Of course part of it is
just curiosity, but the other part is---well, it just makes good
sense.
In order to maintain adequate home owners
(hazard) insurance coverage you need to know how property values
are doing for properties similar to yours.
It can also help with planning
your future - based on past appreciation for your area for a
number of years and recent trends, you can "guestimate"
your future property value (as best as possible) so you can make decisions about moving
to a different community, staying put and modifying your current
property, and other strategies.
Keep in mind real estate is
generally cyclical. This means most years property
values will tend to rise anywhere from a fraction of 1% to a rare
double digit appreciation (yeah!). It also means there may
be some months or years, hopefully not many, where property values
will seem to decrease in value. Don't panic because most of
the time it's temporary.
